🇨🇴 MEDELLIN Tips 🇨🇴
My Wild New Year’s Story (note: it lasted till 7:30am) 🍾🕺
A few weeks ago on Dec 31st, we were a group of 6 guys who went to a lively dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Medellin, called Tulum.
15 minutes in, all our necks started hurting from all the looking left and right (the dancers were drop dead gorgeous LOL).
But after a lovely dinner, drinks, and sparklers going off, it was time for the good stuff: our table at Dulcinea Nightclub 😎
As soon as we arrived, we were escorted to our VIP table in the center of the massive club. Lights were shooting in 500 different directions. Regaetton took control of the night. This is what we came for.
It was going to be a good night.
An hour in, I met a cute blonde Paisa named Erika and ended up talking and dancing with her all night.
Unfortunately, Erika’s friends wanted to head out and go to her friend’s apartment. I gave her a hug and she left.
30 min later, I got a WhatsApp message from her asking if I could pick her up at the bar then go to her friend’s apartment for more new year’s partying.
She sent the address and it was around 15 minutes away.
I thought it would be a fun night if we kept it going. C’mon, New Years in Colombia!
I asked my friend Eli if he wanted to come with me and said let’s do it.
While we were in the Uber, we zoomed into Google Maps and it looked like a sketchy neighborhood.
So, we fired up Hoodmaps to get the real intel…
The location of the bar was in a yellow zone which means proceed with caution.
My hands got clammy and my heart rate increased. 😳
But we still said F**k it, we’re in Medellin baby!
When we arrived, we saw Erika, a pretty friend with round glasses, and 3 guys.
3 guys, yay! 😆
But wait…
One of the guys was like 65 and bald.
I asked her who this is and she said it was her Venezuelan friend’s dad and that we’re going to her friend’s apartment.
Okay so there were 2 random Colombian dudes our age, a Venezuelan dad visiting from his country, 2 girls we had just met, and 2 gringos in the warning zone of God knows where Medellin.
What can go wrong?
Fortunately the apartment was only 5 minutes away.
It was 4:30 am.
The residential neighborhood was covered with brick apartment buildings.
The street was flooded with people dancing, drinking, and blasting music on their speakers with flashing rainbow lights (this would never be allowed in the US hahaha).
I smiled.
This wasn’t sketchy at all.
This was a residential community of happy Colombian locals celebrating the New Year.
As we arrived to the apartment building, we went up a tight and narrow stairwell and walked into the unit.
It was barely 350 square feet and had 2 bedrooms and a balcony.
Immediately, the Venezuelan dad (I forgot his name), searched for his favorite salsa song on YouTube, rotated the speaker volume clockwise, and started dancing the life out of himself.
I had never seen someone salsa dance so hard (and with such flair) as this 5’ 3” Venezuelan grandpa.
He then grabbed our hands and started teaching us salsa lessons with the entire group laughing but in an encouraging and friendly manner.
Grandpa then started cheffing up some crackers with this mushroom ratatouille. He told me it was his special Venezuelan recipe.
I took a bite and wow. Flavorful and crunchy (even though I had a few drinks in my system, I still vividly remember the deliciousness of the dish). I’d rank it a 9.6/10.
He kept saying “mi casa es su casa.”
Then he opened our mouths and started pouring shots of rum in our mouths.
This was so lit.
We ate, drank, danced, laughed, ate more, drank more, until the sun came out at 7am.
To this day, it was the most special yet humbling local experience I’ve ever gone through in my life.
These people who live on the brink of poverty are among the happiest on the planet.
Dancing keeps them young.
Dancing keeps them happy.
People in the USA really do live to work, whereas Colombians and Venezuelans work to live.
I truly felt like home that night.
And if you’re reading this, I hope you have an experience like this one night.
January 1st, 2025 changed my perspective on life.
Now, here’s a highlight reel of that special night 📸

Eli learning the real dance moves 🕺

Grandpa riling us up and about to force rum down our throats 🤘

If you were wondering, this is what we drank all night 🍾

Grandpa tearing up the dance floor with my girl (he’s the only person I’d share her with) 😅

Happy grandpa 👴
